Nail tutorial: Frog nails

Hey everyone! The past couple of weeks I've shown manicures with ladybugs, bunnies and pandas but today it's time for the Frogs. I have to admit that they are not in my top 5 of cute animals, but they look really adorable on the nails! It gave me the opportunity to use my 'Shrek shade' of green as well. I thought it would look a bit scary on the nails so I never used it before, but I actually like it a lot! I think that it's a pretty 'fresh' shade, kinda reminds me of grass and apples.

This is what I used :) From left to right: White nail art striper from Lemax colour, an old liquid eyeliner in black by Catrice, Lime up! from Essence and the 'Pink kitty' nail polish from H&M.

Here you can see what I did to create the frogs! ;) It was really easy, once you're done with painting the body it's just a matter of adding circles in different colours and sizes. It might look even cuter with a blue background, but I just went for pink because I like the contrast a lot! (You can click the picture for a larger image, blogger likes to make everything shrink).

If there are any animal manicures you'd like to see next, let me know! I really enjoy creating them. I was thinking of doing an owl theme next...or perhaps something with a bee. There are too many animals out there ;P

Review: False eyelashes from KKcenterhk

If you don't know about KKcenterhk yet, it's an online shop selling a lot of cute products! (Such as wigs, false eyelashes, eyeshadow palettes etc.). A little while ago the shop contacted me to ask me if I was interested in a sponsorship, and after taking a look at their products and some other reviews I said yes! They sent me the A399 false eyelashes (they work with codes/item numbers on their website). You can find the eyelashes here

They remind me a bit of the 'crisscross' false eyelashes I got from Ebay. I use a lot of false eyelashes from Ebay because they are so cheap, but when it comes to these two I do prefer the ones from KKcenterhk. They go from short to long (= looks more natural) and the eyelash band is thinner.

They definitely make my eyes look a lot bigger! It's a shame that the eyelash band is a little stiff, the bits on the inner corners tend to 'pop back' (even after using some extra eyelash glue). You'll need a bit of patience to get them to stay put. However, because the eyelash band is pretty thin I do use less glue than usual, which means there's less glue residue as well!

I don't use false eyelashes as often as I'd like because I'm pretty clumsy, but I'll definitely use these again! It's a little hard to make them stay in place, you really need a good eyelash glue. But they still look very nice (I love that they go from short to long!) and they are easy to remove as well. $6.50 for 10 pairs is not very expensive, I do like them more than my eyelashes from Ebay! And I have around 4-5 different types of false eyelashes from that place ;)

How do you feel about using false eyelashes?

Okay, this video of our kitten is just for fun! ;) The song and the 'hunter skills' of Ben are so bad that it just makes me laugh :P

NOTD: Fluffy clouds

Hey everyone! As I mentioned earlier this week, the weather over here is super gloomy lately. Feels like I haven't seen a bright blue sky in ages, which is the reason I painted my nails like that! ;) It's super simple, but a nice change from the pink & cute manicures I usually go for. All you need is a bright blue nail polish and a white nail art striper (or just a pigmented white nail polish).

This is what I used, the Turquise kitty nail polish by H&M and the Lemax colour nail art striper in white.

If you follow me on twitter you probably already know that our cat loves to sleep on top of my 'dresser thing' (where I keep all of my nail polish). I decided to wake her up to show her my nails, she wasn't really impressed! :P

The kittens are home!

Hey everyone! It's finally time for a Kitten update! In case you missed the other post (with more information about the cat breed and a lot of pictures etc. ) you can read it here. But to make a long story short: a couple of weeks ago we decided to get two kittens and they are finally home! ;) They are almost 13 weeks old now and SUPER sweet. Ben (the darker one) loves to give kisses, likes to play and sleeps in the most uncomfortable looking positions. His brother Beau is not easily scared, loves to snuggle and was quite impressed by my Hello Kitty collection. Our other cat Lara is still a bit skeptical and doesn't come close to these two, but hopefully they'll get along soon. They still have a bit of a strange smell in her opinion, and she has never seen kittens before ;)

Below I have some more pictures of the two brothers and their siblings! I added the names (if I could remember them correctly) and at the end there are a couple of pictures of Ben and Beau exploring their new home. We keep them in one room at the moment, so we can keep an eye on them and our dogs won't scare them.

This is either Ben or Socks

Same story here :P

I'm sure that I'll do another 'Kitten update' in the future, but I'll mostly just tweet a picture when something cute happens! (You can find me on twitter over here in case you're interested!). However, I just wanted to share this in a proper blog post because I'm really excited that these two are part of the family now! I was afraid that they'd be a bit nervous/shy/scared at first but they act like they've been living here from the start.

10 products I regret buying/won't repurchase

Hey everyone! It seems that the 'favourites of the month' posts are pretty popular, but I'm going to do the opposite today! I thought it would be fun to show 10 products I regret buying or just won't repurchase. Some of them are just too expensive/awful, others are just not my cup of tea.

The weather is super gloomy lately so the pictures didn't turn out so great, it definitely doesn't feel like summer here at the moment! Anyway, let's take a look at 10 of my least favourite products! You can click on the links to go to a review of a certain product, in case you want to know more about it ;)

From left to right we have a dry shampoo, eye cream (both from Kruidvat), Hydrating and smoothing foundation from Sephora and a loose face powder from NYC. The dry shampoo and loose face powder work fine, but I never use them. I prefer a shower and a compact powder! ;) Eye cream in a jar was just a big fail with my long nails, and the eye cream wasn't very good either. The foundation is the worst foundation I've tried so far.

From left to right you can see a concealer palette from Catrice, Light diffusing concealer from Collection 2000, Duo lash glue, 24/7 Glide on eye pencil from Urban Decay duo in zero/whiskey (it came free with the Naked palette, but I still dislike it) and the Forget it! concealer from Essence. All of the concealers are okay, but I wouldn't repurchase them because I'm sure that there are better concealers out there! The lash glue and eye pencil are just way too expensive, I actually prefer a cheap lash glue from Ebay and there are cheaper + better eye pencils as well. (I compared both of the products to similar products in the reviews).

Last but not least, my 28 neutral palette. It wasn't expensive, but I do regret buying this! I rarely use it because the pigmentation is just not great. I bought it because I thought that it would be a nice 'everyday palette' for neutral looks, but it's pretty disappointing. I got it from Ebay though, so maybe I just got a bit unlucky, a lot of girls seem to love this palette!

Do you have a product you regret buying or wouldn't repurchase?

NOTD: Pink and Dots

Hi guys! I've been walking around with ladybugs, bunnies and pandas on my nails for the past couple of weeks so I decided to go back to basic ;) I just went crazy with a lot of pink/purple shades and my dotting tool. It looks pretty simple but I love pink so I like it a lot! (Although I'd love to see how it turns out with different shades of blue or green).

I used 'Get a rose 4 me' from H&M as the base colour, it's definitely one of my favourite shades of pink! I also used 3 nail paints from Barry M to create the dots: Number 024 (LE), Shocking pink and Bright purple. I added the dots with the dotting tool that came with my nail art brushes.

Next time I want to make the dots a little bigger! My dotting tool wasn't being very versatile, so I'm going to look for something else to create dots with. Perhaps a hairpin or something like that! ;)

A side note: Remember the post about the kittens? If everything goes to plan we can pick them up this Friday! I'm really excited and I'm definitely going to dedicate another post to them when they arrive (they're SO cute). Just hope they won't start playing with my nail polish when I'm painting my nails!

FOTD: Peachy Pink

My make-up didn’t really match the weather today (it has been raining a lot here lately) but I don’t really mind! I love playing around with make-up when it rains outside and this time I decided to make a colourful look with the help of my 88 matte palette from Coastal scents. I’m wearing my favourite nude lipstick Pumpkin pie from Nyx on the lips, with a bit of transparent lip gloss (shade 5 from MUA) on top. On the cheeks I have the Peach Sorbet blush from Catrice, a very nice budget-proof blush!

A close-up of the eyes: I applied a peachy/orange shade all over my eyelid and blended the edges with a hot pink. I added a tiny bit of purple in the outer corner & a bit of white under the eyebrow. I have white eyeliner on my lower waterline, and I always use some black eyeliner and mascara to finish a look ;)

I hope you enjoyed your weekend!

Review: Fotolia (with a free trial)

It’s a pretty hot topic in the blogging world: pictures and copyright. I’m definitely not an expert but when I heard about the term ‘stock photo site’ I was immediately interested. It’s as if luck was on my side, because around that time Fotolia offered me an one month subscription so I could try their site and share my experiences on my blog. Fotolia is one of those stock photo sites, which means that they offer a huge database with photographs, HD videos, illustrations and more. I included some pictures of Fotolia in my review to show you a glimpse of what they have...and to make all of the text look a little less boring ;)

On Fotolia members buy and sell images, when you buy an image you can use it for websites, advertisements, presentations etc. You can purchase either credits (credits start from $0.75 each) or you can get yourself a subscription. Signing up was super easy, I just created an account and was allowed to download up to 5 images a day. They have a very user-friendly ‘member home’ where you can find your purchased files, your credits, personal messages etc. They also have a very clear FAQ page,  I was wondering if I still had to add copyright information and I could find the answer within seconds. (If interested: it’s not required to add the information when you use an image on your website but it’s appreciated).

They have a huge selection of great quality pictures, there’s a lot of diversity and you can find a lot of unique pictures (I haven’t seen any of the pictures I downloaded on another website before). To download an image, I could scroll down to the bottom of the page and find a special button for people with a subscription. The photos are in a large size but I didn’t mind that, you can still adjust them as you like (sometimes I need big images for a background and sometimes I prefer smaller ones for a blog post).  When you download images you can immediately see the contract details as well, reminding you what you can and cannot do with an image.

As a blogger, I’m very excited about this website. It’s a very user-friendly site, offering good images and the communication went lovely (they were very helpful and friendly). Okay, getting images costs money, but you’ll be 100% sure that you can use the pictures without getting sued (as long as you follow the contract details of course). I was lucky that they offered me a free subscription, I managed to download a lot of useful images for my site and future posts. But if I need a specific image in the future, I’ll definitely take a look on Fotolia!

In case you’re also interested in trying the site for free: Fotolia offers 5 of my readers a free trial! The codes will be valid for 14 days and you can download 3 pictures per day. If you are interested, please let me know in a comment! I’ll e-mail you the code & the link where you can enter it. First come, first serve! (You'll need to add your e-mail address, or send me an e-mail in case you don't want to put it in a comment).

Recipe: Koe Low Kai and Pisang Goreng

When we go to a Chinese restaurant, we always order some Koe Low Kai (Fried chicken in Sweet-sour sauce). I really wanted to try making it myself, so today I decided to go for it! The recipe is not very complicated, although frying the chicken can take a while. I never tried Pisang Goreng (fried banana) before, so I decided to make that as well. The Koe low Kai recipe totally failed, but when I used the batter that was meant for the Pisang Goreng it suddenly turned out great! That’s why I’ll only talk about one ‘batter recipe’ below, you can use that one for both recipes.

Here's what we need! For the batter you'll need 200 ml of milk, 1 egg, one pack of vanilla sugar and 200 g of self-rising flour. For the Koe low Kai you add chicken (250 g) and for the Pisang Goreng you add 4 bananas. (This is more than enough for 4 people).

If you want to make the sweet-sour sauce as well, you'll need 180 g sugar, 3 Tbs mashed tomatoes, 1 Tbs of tomato sauce, 100 ml white vinegar and a bit of Corn starch to thicken everything.

You start with cutting the chicken/bananas. Easy!

Then it's time to make the batter, just mix everything (milk, the egg, flour & vanilla sugar) and add some salt and pepper if you like. It should be smooth and not too thin. When it's ready, you can dip the banana/chicken into the batter. Now t's ready to get deep fried in hot oil!

Now you wait until it gets golden brown and crispy ;)

For the sauce, start with cooking the water, sugar and vinegar. Add the mashed tomatoes and the tomato sauce and cook again. Add Corn starch until you get the thickness you like.

It was a bit hard to get the perfect shape (I even asked my dad to help me but we didn't even get close). In a Chinese restaurant the Koe low kai always looks quite round but I guess the taste matters most, and I loved them! I was not such a fan of the Pisang Goreng (a bit too sweet for me) but the Koe low kai turned out great! Next time I'm going to experiment a little more, this was a pretty basic recipe ;)

EOTD: A bit of Teal

Hey everyone! Today I’m going to show an ‘Eye Of The Day’ I really like: a look with lots of green and teal! When I have to go to school I keep my make-up very simple, but when I'm at home or go shopping etc. I like to add some colour to my look ;) This time I used my beloved MUA eye shadows, they’re very budget proof and the pigmentation is quite nice! Below you can see the shades I used.

Those numbers are the ‘names’ of the shades, shade 8 is definitely one of my favourites! I used the beige one as a highlighter, the black shade as eyeliner and I used the other 3 for my eyelid. If you want to know more about the eye shadows from MUA, I do have a few posts with a lot of swatches & other information (you can use the search bar to find them).

And here is the full face! I paired the look with my Viva glam Gaga lipstick and the Adorable blush from Essence. Subtle but still cute!

Beauty Vibes has a new layout!

A couple of days ago I asked for help because I couldn’t choose a new layout (I got addicted to Artisteer and ended up with 3 nice looking layouts). I got a lot of replies and I want to thank everyone for that, I’m really happy that people shared their opinion to help me out! Even though nobody liked the pink theme, lol :P A lot of people liked the black/red layout because it looked modern and the header was pretty eye-catching. There was also a big group of girls (okay, and my dad) voting for the green layout, because it looked more unique and summer ish. Because I agreed with both sides, it only got harder to actually choose something, but I finally did it! As you can see, I chose the green layout because I do agree that it’s a pretty unique shade (I don’t know a lot of beauty blogs with a green theme) and the other layout felt a bit too modern/sexy for my site.

If you voted for the other layout, I hope you don’t feel disappointed! I really appreciated all the feedback and there was no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ layout in my eyes. I just had to pick something, and I decided to go with what felt like best choice!
