Battle of the empty palettes!

I've been looking for an empty palette for a while now, so I decided to put them next to each other to find out which one actually works best. Here are our contestants!

1. Coastal scents with their empty magnetic palette
2. Yaby with the Freestyle palette
3. Unii cosmetics with their Unii palette
4. MAC cosmetics with their custom palette
5. Z palette with the Z palette

All of them have some good and 'bad' bits, so we will look at them individually first. Same order ;)

1. Coastal scents
-$7,95
-Sold in a matte black
-Closes with a clasp
-Smaller than the MAC one
-In stead of plastic, the bit that holds the pans together is made of foam
-You can find similar palettes on Ebay and Starsmakeuphaven
-Pans included
-Only works for CS products (?)

This one is the cheapest and probably the easiest to get because many places sell something similar (or perhaps even the same product). You can compare it with their 88 palettes, which are also sold cheaper on Ebay and you can find them at other sites. I'd say this one is nice if you just want to try something out or if you don't really need a big palette at the moment, it won't cost you a fortune to fiddle around with this one.

It's smaller than Yaby or MAC but you can still fit a nice amount of eye shadows inside. I don't really like the whole 'only works for CS eye shadows' on the website though. I'm sure others will fit in as well, but that would take some DIY work. If that's not your thing, it's probably easier to get something you'll only need magnetic tape/pans for.

2. Yaby
-$15,65 - $17,50 dollar
-Magnetic bottom
-Big mirror
-Sold in white
-The Freestyle palette has a flat surface, unlike what you see in the picture, so you can fit all sizes of eye shadow in
-Closes with a clasp

Yaby is a bit more expensive than the one from MAC or CS, but it does have a mirror and if you don't like black this one is a great option. In my case (and probably for all the girls not living close to a MAC pro store) it's easier to get than a MAC palette.

It does have a clasp which I don't really like, but I suppose the majority of the palettes out there come with the clasp. It's about the same size as a MAC palette, so it will hold plenty of eye shadows.

3. Unii cosmetics
-$29
-Large mirror
-Movable thumb grip
-Comes with a sheet of magnetic writable labels
-Has a rubber seal around the inside
-Sold in 5 colours (white, red, purple, green and blue)
-Besides eye shadows, you can also fit certain brushes into this one
-Snap-shut closure
-Small size (Smaller than MAC, CS etc.)

I love how this one looks, it comes in very nice colours and doesn't have the typical palette look. The mirror and the strong clasp are a huge plus and the thumb holder and magnetic sheets are a nice bonus. I like this one a lot for travelling, I would feel safe with the rubber protection (this made myself laugh), strong clasp and a nice big mirror.

Because this one is a bit small, it will only hold around half of what a MAC palette can hold. I think the price is very high, even though you can see that it's not some cheap plastic product, I wouldn't feel good spending so much on a palette. I think you have to see this as an investment, but because I wouldn't travel with it every day it's not my first choice. If that changes in the future, who knows!

4. MAC cosmetics
-$14 dollars
-The bottom is magnetic
-Only sold in black
-You can find them on their website and the Pro MAC stores
-Closes with a clasp
-Slightly smaller than a DVD

With this one you have the choice to leave it like that or to take the plastic thing out so it can hold more eye shadows (same thing goes for CS I suppose). The MAC one is a bit more expensive than some of the other ones (kinda in the middle). I think this is a very classic looking palette, sturdy and it will hold a lot of eyeshadows (I believe it holds around 25 without the inserted plastic thing?)

This one might be a bit hard to get because it's not sold in every MAC store or their counters. I'd have to order it, but for me it would be less expensive to order something that's also sold in Dutch webshops like the Z palette or the Yaby palette. I think that it's a shame, because if this was sold at their counters it would be easy to get and great for starters like me.

5. Z palette
-$20 dollars
-Magnetic base
-Made out of eco-friendly material (cardboard paper)
-It has a 'window' so you can see what's inside
-Magnetic closure
-Comes in different colours (black, pink) and different prints (zebra, leopard)

Some people don't like the cardboard because it gets dirty easily and you have to be careful that the palette doesn't get wet. I think it's not all bad, because cardboard is more flexible than solid material like plastic, so if you drop this it has better chances of surviving than a plastic palette. I also love the window and the designs are cute. I know some people like to decorate their Z palettes and glue things onto it, so you can definitely make this one very personal.

However, I don't trust that magnet closure much. I'm afraid it will get weaker eventually or that it can still snap open. Even if it won't, I'm the kind of girl who would constantly worry about it if I had it in my purse. The price is a bit on the high side as well, so I'd keep my eyes open for a discount if you want this.

So what works best?

If you do have the money for it and if you want to take your palette with you everywhere you go, I think Unii is the best one to go for. It's safe and you can always pop a brush or two inside. I love the colours and how the palette looks.

If travelling is not such a big issue and you don't want to spend a whole lot of money, the one from CS, MAC and Yaby are a good choice. Yaby has the mirror, MAC is the same size but cheaper, and the one from CS is the cheapest but also the smallest out of the three. It depends on the amount of space you want in your palette and what's the cheapest/easiest to get.

The Z palette is a little different because of the window that helps you to see what's inside. I think this one is especially nice if you have a big collection and want to store everything in the 'easy to find' way.

Well, that was a lot to write :P I personally fit into the second category. Travelling with my eye shadows won't be happening all the time and I don't have enough to fill a couple of palettes. I do want something bigger than the CS one, MAC is hard to get for me so my first choice would be the white Yaby palette.

Do you have or want one of those palettes? Please share!

Lipstick and Lipgloss: swatches!

Remember those lipproducts I got thanks to a blogsale? Today I have the swatches! Let's take a look at what we have first:

A lipgloss by H&M, this is the colour Soda Pop. The packaging is pretty cute (I like the curved shape) and a lot stronger than I thought it would be. It's VERY hard plastic, not something you can squeeze.

This is the colour Call me Plum, a lipgloss by H&M as well. They both have doe-foot/small slanted sponge applicators, which are pretty common but they work fine for me.

This is the Hema (Dutch warehouse) moisturizing lipstick in...nr. 92? No name? :/ But I do like the packaging, a simple classic black. The lipstick 'expires' after 36 months, which kind of surprised me. If you look at the lipstick below by NYX it says 12 months, I trust my own instinct when it comes down to throwing make-up away though, but it's still nice to know.

So here we have a Black Label lipstick in nr. 114 Diva (are you reading this Hema? You can do numbers and names!) by NYX. I absolutely love the packaging, the details are feminine and the colours are simple.

First I made some swatches on the skin. Here you can see that the two lipglosses aren't super pigmented, but I don't mind that very much. The lipsticks are both creamy and very pigmented, nr. 92 is a lot more pink on the skin than I expected, and Diva just reminds me of chocolate (Ha, that lipstick really suits me).

On top are the lipglosses, Soda Pop on the left and Call me Plum on the right. I didn't expect this because I always babble about not being a lipgloss girl but I actually adore them! They feel so nice on the lips (smooth, not sticky) and are not too glossy. In stead they give your lips a nice shine and the colours are very natural looking. Now the best part: these glosses smell like Fruit Sorbets! You don't notice the scent after you put them on, which is nice in case you hate it, but I really love it~

Seems Blogger deleted this part after I posted it >.< but I mentioned that the nr.92 (on the left) is tricky to apply because it's a very bright colour and you see the flaws easier. Diva is on the right and very creamy, it doesn't have the typical NYX round lipstick scent some girls can't stand.

In short: If you're looking for very pigmented colours those lipglosses aren't what you're looking for, but if you want smooth and subtle ones they are great. Nr. 92 is tricky to apply but very pigmented for a cheap lipstick, there are a lot of other colours to choose from as well. Diva is nice and creamy with no annoying smell. What annoys me about it however, is that the bottom bit with extra lipstick won't come off, unlike the round lipsticks.

10 Nail Polishes I'd love to own

First of all, I've reached 250 followers today and super happy with that! I want to thank all of you for sticking with me (or joining the club in case you recently joined?) :P 250 is a great number for a giveaway of course, I already got some goodies but I still need to buy some more. I kinda wanted to have like 4 little themes and prizes so there would be more winners, but I'm still not sure :/ Would one big prize be nicer? I need feedback!

Since I'm not allowed to buy anything for a while, my sweetheart suggested to come up with little 'wishlists' so I could put all of the things I might want together. I think that it's a great idea, it gives me more time to think about purchasing something and looking around for random products can be a lot of fun. Last night I started with nail polish, I saw enough gorgeous ones to come up with a top 100, but I narrowed it down a bit :P

I got my first bottle of OPI a few weeks ago and I fell in love with it, I'd love to get the two above someday!

It's the same story with China Glaze, I only have one so far, they have a lot of nice looking colours so I definitely want more of them as well.

Misa would be new for me, I think that it's a super cute name and they have a couple of really interesting colours.

I put these two together, I haven't tried either of them before but I really look forward to trying a Zoya polish out.

Those are 10 of the polishes I'd love to own :) I always try to look for shades that aren't part of my collection yet, or the really unique looking ones. Wich are on your 'wanted' list?

Project 10 pan, it started!

I was going to post this yesterday but I was way too excited to show my camera (which I started using like crazy = no power when I wanted to take pictures for my blog...so yeah, the better quality will have to wait another post, oops!) >.> Anyways, today I'm posting my project 10 pan products. I decided to keep things a little bit easy, because this is my first project and unlike some girls doing this sort of thing I don't have 20 blushes or 5 foundations or anything like that to choose from. I started my 'collection' in December 2009 so it's actually pretty small, most of my stuff was given to me or is still fairly new. That's why the products are probably nothing exciting, but it will still be a challenge! Here they are:

I made little groups to explain why I picked these products:

Here we have a couple of products that got replaced, I changed my nail polish remover because this one dried my skin out, I switched from mousse to liquid foundation and I replaced the make-up remover stuff because it stung like hell. I'm not thrilled about having to use them again, but I didn't want to throw them away either. Time to get them empty! (Luckily, the nail polish remover almost is, although I can't promise I won't accidently spill the make-up remover...)

These are a bit easier, I use them all the time. My daycreme, nightcreme and my absolute favourite shampoo ever. That stuff does wonders for my hair. I won't have much trouble with these 3 :)

Here we have some things that might take longer than I expect them too. First we have a lipstick, nothing special but brand new so I wonder how long that will take me. Next we have deodorant, not the kind I like to use so that has to be used up as well. I also put a mascara there because I use multiple ones right now but now I want to actually use one up before it dries out. Finally, the lipgloss. Something I don't use that much because I don't feel like it suits me, but maybe my opinion will change after I struggle long enough with this one :P

My sister was kind enough to join me, she's 14 so she doesn't own that much make-up yet. That's why she picked 5 products, I'm really happy that she's helping me though. Doing something like this together will definitely help me to last (even though I was already checking out nail polish tonight).

That's her stuff :) Now our project officially started, and I wonder how we will survive. I actually feel like ordering stuff now just because I'm not allowed to :P But I'm going to do my best not to buy anything beauty related until I finish those products up. I'll keep everyone updated!

Meet my new camera!

I'm super excited to share my new camera with everyone! Until now, I took pictures with my phone and the webcam from my laptop, but I've always wanted a decent camera. Yesterday I ended up looking around in one of those stores specialized in camera's and the man working there asked what I was looking for. 'Something to take nice pictures with, and something that can record a decent video,' I simply answered. First he showed me the Exilim EX-FC10 which was nice, but I totally fell in love with its 'big brother' the Exilim EX-FC100!

This one has high speed burst shooting, which means you can take 30 pictures in just one second. As soon as you hit the button, it already took 10 pictures! I also like the anti-shake function, and it has a little menu where you can pick a subject. If you want to take a picture of your cat for example, you select 'pets' and it automatically changes to the right settings to take the best picture.

In stead of the 'I'm not looking!' ones I usually get when I try to photograph our dog (sometimes her fault, sometimes the fault of a slow phone), I can finally get the picture I want to have.

It also has HD video capability and can even record things in (ultra) slow motion, which looks awesome if you jump up in the air. It also records voices properly, no turning up the volume to the max anymore for me :P

For the ones who are interested, here's a review I found online about this camera. There are a couple video's to show the slow motion effect I mentioned which are pretty cool.

Overall I'm just super happy with it. From now on my pictures will be of a better quality, and if I want to do video's in the future I'll have a good camera for that too. I know some bloggers/youtubers (this one can focus!) out there are looking for a camera, so I wanted to suggest this one. In my country, it's currently on sale (yay!) because they expect newer models soon.

NYX Ultra Pearl Mania pigments

Today I'm going to show the swatches of the NYX pigments I recently purchased. From left to right we have Ocean Blue (yup, there are two), Grass, Lime and Yellow. I've never worked with pigments before so I was very curious!

Below we have yellow first, then we have Lime followed by Grass and last but not least there's Ocean Blue. The swatches on top are with a base (NYX Milk) and below you can see them dry without anything underneath.

I think that they are gorgeous! The shimmer is nice, the pigmentation is good enough for me and they are not expensive. I already discovered them here on CherryCulture for $ 1.50 each, so when I'm done with the Project 10 pan I'd love to order some more. Until then I have enough time to play around with these colours.

Are they 100% awesome? Well...I do think that they are a bit messy, when I tried to get the product out through the small opening of the jar I couldn't help spilling a bit. I hate wasting make-up like that, so I understand why some girls put the pigments in a different kind of jar.

Do you have any of these pigments? I'd love to get Purple, Space, Very pink and Rust next.

Blogsale purchases & Project 10 pan

A couple of days ago I came across an interesting blog sale, so I decided to get myself some pretty stuff. Pigments are new to me, so I definitely had to snatch them away before someone else did! Here's what I got:

I got NYX pigments in Ocean blue (one for me and one for my sister), Grass pearl, Lime and Yellow pearl. I already swatched them and I'm very positive so far, but I'm going to do a look with them tomorrow and see how impressive they are on the eyes before I post more regarding these beauties!

I got two lip glosses as well, the colours are Call me Plum and Soda Pop. Both are by H&M, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with these because I'm not really a lip gloss girl, but for 1 euro each I couldn't leave them behind. (Yeah, I know..sounds like a problem) :P

Finally we have the two lipsticks, I've never tried any of the NYX black label lipsticks so I can't wait to try that one out. The one from Hema is brand new and looks nice as well, I will definitely swatch both in the near future.

Now about project 10 pan...

I didn't plan on doing this at all, but after another beauty blogger came up with the idea and a good look at my new stuff I kinda knew I had to join. I love getting new products, but before it gets out of control I want to focus on the things I have. In case you've never heard of project 10 pan: the idea is to finish up 10 beauty/make-up products, until then, you can't buy anything new.

My first idea was hell no! August is my birthday month, and I was planning to get some nice make-up for my birthday. But then I realized how make-up is becoming such a big thing (aka obsession) to me, I keep adding things because they're 'oh so pretty' without using things up first. A couple of days ago I threw some old lipsticks away and some other things and I just wondered how it would feel if someday I had to do the same with the make-up I have right now. Wouldn't I rather use it up?

So yeah, before I knew it I agreed to join and even convinced my sister to follow my lead. I'll be doing it together with some other girls, so hopefully it will make my first project 10 pan a bit easier. It will be starting on Sunday, so then I'll probably make a blog post with more details about everything.

Have you ever tried the project 10 pan yourself? Would you do it again or if you haven't tried it yet, care to join me and feel miserable together? :P

How to make bright lipstick work

Going from an everyday neutral face to a bright lip can be a pretty big step for some girls (including myself) so I wanted to share how I did it. Some may rememer the awesome red lipstick called Alarm (swatch here) from a few weeks ago, and I couldn't wait to wear it more often. In the second picture I only stained my lips a little with the colour..but yeah, that's not really bright yet is it? Time to show the lipstick in full power!

If bright lipstick by itself makes you feel weird, my tip is to combine it with a matching accessory. This helps to make sure all of the attention won't be drawn to just your lips, it will be drawn to your matching bow (or perhaps earrings, necklace etc.) and the lipstick together, making everything look more in place. The key is to show that you thought about things, and didn't just steal your mothers red lipstick. Once you feel more confident with brighter colours, you can try to wear them on their own.

Wearing the lipstick like that made me feel comfortable enough to go out during the day, as long as you keep your eyes neutral I don't think it's too much. I actually love how the lipstick by itself can change the face, because I only used a bit of mascara and eye liner in those pictures. During the summer, I prefer to make my lips stand out because I feel like too much eye make-up just sweats off anyway!

In case you're interested in the hair bow clip, I got it from H&M. You get two for around 3 euro's, which is around 4 dollars :)

How to use Fimo Canes: Sweet VS. Bad nail tutorial

So today I'm going to show two things: How I cut the Fimo Canes (the ones I showed everyone in an earlier post here) and the first 'design' I came up with. My sister joined the fun as usual, so in the end we had two very different designs. Mine is inspired by all sweet and cute things and hers by (hold yourself tight) twilight...but let's get started!

So I use 3 things: tweezers, a sharp knife and an old picture frame (you want the glass part to cut on). You can use different things, but most important are the sharp knife and a flat, hard surface to work on. I only use the tweezers because I'm super clumsy and would like to keep my fingers intact :P

I've watched a couple of videos on YouTube to get an idea how to cut the canes, but in the end I just did it my own way. Take a cane you don't like that much to practice with, and after a few slices you will find a way that works for you.

The canes won't deform that easily (they are pretty much like rubber) and eventually you'll pick up a rhythm which makes it really fun to do.

Now it's time to get a little creative!

Bad or Sweet, we start out with a base coat.

For the sweet version, go for a nice pink shade (this just reminds me of strawberry icecream, but you could go for an other light shade as well, like a yellow or brown colour). If you want to go dark, pick a nice black.

Then it's time for some glitter, now the sweet girls have some sugar and the bad girls can honour sparkling vampires ;)

This is an extra step for the Sweeties, I needed a stick for my Lollipop so I just used a sticker. If you have one, you could use a nail art pen as well. (Even paper would work).

Now you can grab your topcoat and pick the slices of Fimo you want to use, I suggest doing one nail at the time because you need to work fast. (Especially if you use a fast drying topcoat like me).

Next, you apply your topcoat and place the Fimo Canes onto your nails. Press them a little so they'll stick to your nail as best as they can.

To give your nails extra protection, apply a layer of topcoat on top of everything. This should be enough to secure the slices of Fimo Canes. I think I did my nails 8-9 hours ago and everything is still in place :)

Here are a couple more pictures of my design:

Fun, easy and definitely cute! I really like playing around with Fimo Canes. I'm not really good with stamping or painting my nails perfectly, so this is great if you just want something that looks awesome but takes little effort. It's also super cheap, like I told everyone in my other post about these canes ;)

I hope this was fun to read! I'm going on a little trip tomorrow so I wanted to keep everyone busy :P I'm going to shop and dazzle everyone with my nails, but I'll be back on Sunday :)
